In short, Google had the best utility in terms of search with a better business model that doesn't ruin the user experience. What people seek for relevant information to their search queries. Indexing information based on linking helped them surface relevant information. Also, implementing a clickthrough rate helped them show relevant information in search results.

Search, discovery and marketing by Benedict Evans (8min)
‘Yahoo’s directory didn’t scale’ misses the point. What we’re really seeing is a trade-off between two problems. You can have a list, solving discovery and recommendation, but once the domain gets big then your list is either unusably long or partial and incomplete. Or you can have a searchable index of everything but you’re on your own working out what’s good and finding things you didn't know to search for.

It’s no longer enough to organize the world’s information. It becomes important to organize the world’s trustworthy information. The opportunity in search is not to attack Google head-on with a massive, one-size-fits-all horizontal aggregator, but instead to build boutique search engines that index, curate, and organize things in new ways.
