How We Misunderstand Anxiety and Miss Out on Its Benefits
by Dacher Keltner, Kira M. Newman (8min)
Anxiety is telling us that we care about the future and want it to turn out a certain way. In fact, feeling anxious actually releases dopamine, which motivates us to pursue rewards and take action to bring about the future we want. What anxiety does is it’s saying you have this uncertain future, and it’s telling you that you care about the future because you can’t ignore it and you need to investigate. The first principle is anxiety is information. Listen to it.

Designing a better thinking-writing medium
by Linus (8min)Writing is the creative by-product of your learning and thinking process. A tool for better thinking is necessarily a tool for better writing, and a tool that helps you write better necessarily also aids in thinking. Our brains are good at thinking moment to moment, but not over time, especially across days and weeks, and months. Writing helps us think better because it allows us to think across time.

Expression is Compression
by David Perell (7min)
Full-time authors, for example, don’t actually type for 40 hours per week because they’d have little to say if they did. Instead, they spend most of their time collecting experiences. By the time they sit down to write, they’ve already experienced what they plan to write about, even if they aren’t entirely sure about what they’re going to say. When they succeed, their stories are well-compressed. Compression can conjure the essence of an experience, but never the real thing.

πŸ‘€ What we're following

AI is really hot these days πŸ”₯

  • Did you already listen to podcast.ai in which Joe Rogan interviews Steve Jobs but it's entirely generated by AI? They say that they trained AI by using Steve Jobs's data from his biography and all recordings of him on the web. It is very fascinating because if we can gather the person's data enough, we could regenerate the person with AI 🀯
  • As we mentioned in previous newsletters, now there are many services that allow us to generate images from a simple prompt. DALL-E from OpenAI, Stable Difusion from stability.ai, Midjourney, to name a few. Also, some AI content creation services such as copy.ai or jasper.ai help us write an entire 2,000-word article by just putting the title and keywords. Some ask "Is AI art/creation ethical?"

We think with Glasp and AI we could somehow help us think, learn, and create something better! If we can capture the sparked ideas and thoughts from our brain, we could understand ourselves better and it could help other people too. Kazuki recently wrote about it as an important question for us.

Hope you enjoyed reading this newsletter!
See you next week ;)

Best,
Kei and Kazuki
